Harriet Ruth Halsey Freeman, a longtime resident of Dobson, North Carolina and a recent resident of Brookridge Retirement Community in Winston-Salem, North Carolina died October 18, 2015. She was born May 12, 1914 in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, the daughter of the late Allie and Josie Speeks Halsey. She attended both Elementary and High School at Oak Hill Academy, Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, graduating in 1930. Following high school she attended Virginia Intermont at Bristol, Virginia and continued her education at Emory and Henry College in Emory, Virginia, where she received her BA degree in 1934.

After teaching two years in Virginia, she relocated to Dobson, North Carolina. She taught at Dobson High School and later at Surry Central High School where she served as the Librarian until her retirement in 1984. She was a dedicated educator, devoted to her students and much loved by them.
Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Robert A. Freeman, Jr., who died in 1977. She was also predeceased by two brothers, Vance Halsey of Dublin, Virginia, and Edward Halsey of Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, and a sister, Norene Anderson of Independence, Virginia. Surviving are two sons, Robert Alexander Freeman III, and wife, Marilyn of Asheville, North Carolina and William Halsey Freeman, and wife, Cortlandt of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Ruth was most fortunate to have reached a “level of maturity” in her life to have enjoyed not only her sons, but also three grandsons, Brad Freeman and wife, Cassie of Asheville, North Carolina; Douglas Freeman and partner, Bradshaw Orrell of Greensboro, North Carolina; and Robb Freeman and wife, Gwyneth of Bangor, Maine; two step grandsons George Boss Jr. and wife Kim, Chris Boss and wife Catherine; four great grandchildren – who were “the apples of her eye,” Chase (who shared her May 12th birthday), Sully, Halsey (her name sake) and Porter; and three step great grandchildren Whitney Boss, Lacey Boss and Jack Boss. Ruth leaves many special nieces, nephews and friends – all whom she loved dearly. Her family and friends were always her top priority. Their visits, letters, cards and phone calls were her “mainstay” for many years. Funeral Service will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday October 21, 2015 at the Dobson First Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Dobson City Cemetery. Rev. Cory Honeycutt and Dr. Van Lankford will conduct the services. The Family will receive friends at Moody-Davis Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Her sons wish to thank her caregivers at Brookridge for the loving care she received during the past 5 ½ years. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Dobson First Baptist Church PO Box 278, Dobson, NC 27017 or to the Ruth H. Freeman Endowment, Surry County Schools Educational Foundation C/O Melissa White 209 N. Crutchfield St. Dobson, NC 27017
