----- Deceased Name: JOHN CRUM, BOWLING PROMOTER AND BUSINESSMAN, DIES AT 70 -- A Wichita bowling legend has died after a long battle with cancer.
John Crum, bowling center entrepreneur and soon-to-be National Bowling Hall of Famer, was 70. The co-owner of the Alley, Northrock Lanes and West Acres Bowl died Monday. Visitation is 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today , 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, at Smith Mortuary, 1415 N. Rock Road in Derby. His funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at Chapel Hill Fellowship United Methodist Church, 11660 E. 13th St. Mr. Crum was born Feb. 21, 1935, at his family's farm near Mulvane. He graduated from Derby High School in 1953 and from Wichita State University in 1957, with a degree in physical education. He and his wife, Martha Ann, were married that year. By the late 1950s, the couple were very much "into" bowling. "John liked to bowl, and back then, bowling was the thing," said Martha Ann Crum. "It was a wonderful business for all the years we've been involved."
Working with his father-in-law, Mr. Crum opened Boulevard Bowl in 1960. It boasted more than bowling. It was a place to meet friends and have a meal.
At one time, Mr. Crum owned 63 bowling centers in 17 states. In more recent years, he and his daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Frank DeSocio, owned Joma Bowling Co., which operates seven bowling centers, including the three here in Wichita.
Mr. Crum served on nearly every local, state and national bowling committee. In June, he will be inducted into the National Bowling Hall of Fame in St. Louis, Mo.
"He loved to bowl - he never had a 300 game but did bowl a 298 once," Martha Ann Crum said. "I still remember when he had it - his eyes just twinkled." While others might bowl 300 games, Mr. Crum excelled at running and promoting bowling centers. The sport excelled because of him.
"He was somebody who loved life and loved people," she said. In recent years, Mr. Crum learned that he had cancer. His friends and family say the disease didn't slow him down. Jeff Ablah had a regular Monday night gin game with Mr. Crum. "He was just the tough unrelenting buddy," Ablah said. "He was given months to live, and this was years ago. And he just said, 'No.' " Most days, when Ablah asked Mr. Crum how he was feeling, Mr. Crum responde d, "About 60-40."
Last week, when Mr. Crum was in the hospital, Ablah called him. Mr. Crum joked and said that instead of 60-40, he was running more like 40-20. But he added that he'd be out of the hospital in time for this week's gin game because he needed the cash. "He's one of a kind," Ablah said.

Survivors include wife, Martha Ann; son, Todd of Kansas City, Mo.; daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Frank DeSocio of Wichita; grandchildren, Drew, Alex and Elizabeth DeSocio; and uncle, Delbert McKinney of Wichita.
Memorials have been established in Mr. Crum's name with Chapel Hill Fellowship, 11660 E. 13th St., Wichita, KS 67206, and Victory in the Valley, 3755 E. Douglas, Wichita, KS 67218.
