Robert Martin Alexander, 82, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, January 26, 1999. Mr. Alexander received his Master's Degree from Rutgers University in Social Services. He retired as Chief of Bureau of Social Services in the state of New Jersey. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Verda Smith Alexander; daughter, Arleen Alexander; brothers, Acee Alexander, Leo Alexander; sister, Etta Mae Thompson. He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Larry Landes of McKinney, Texas, Noreen and Merle Barr of Covington, Patricia and Rudy Hofheinz of Roanoke; eleven grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; a brother, Alvin, and wife, Junith Alexander of Portland, Ore.; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 7 p.m. Thursday, January 28, 1999, at Oakey's North Chapel with Rev. Bob Alderman officiating. A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Friday, January 29, 1999, at Maple Hill Cemetery in Petersburg, W.Va. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Oakey's North Chapel.
