Verda Smith Alexander, 83, of Roanoke and formerly of Petersburg, W.Va., died Thursday, December 11, 1997, at Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem. Born on October 5, 1914, at Knobley, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Austin and Augusta Lyon Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Kathleen Cline and Georgiana Smith. Mrs. Alexander graduated from Petersburg High School in 1931. She was a telephone operator for Central Telephone Company in Petersburg for several years, and retired from the New Jersey State Health Department in 1976. She was a member of Shenandoah Baptist Church in Roanoke. On May 29, 1937, she married Robert M. Alexander, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Joyce Landes of McKinney, Texas, Noreen Barr of Covington and Patricia Hofheinz of Roanoke; three sisters, Helen Boor of Petersburg, Phyllis Crites of Philippi, W.Va., and Joan Hott of Moorefield, W.Va.; two brothers, Orlen A. (Bus) Smith of Petersburg and Curtis (Gus) Smith of Yorktown; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 1 until 3 p.m. Saturday at Schaeffer Funeral Home, 11 North Main Street, Petersburg, W.Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with her grandson, Karl Hofheinz, officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Petersburg. Memorials may be made to the Petersburg High School Scholarship Fund or Roanoke Valley Christian Schools, 6520 Williamson Road, Roanoke, Va.
