Mrs. Debra Joyce Thurmond Strong, age 58, of Henderson was born to Governor Thurmond, Sr. and Millie Mae Marbley Thurmond. She attended school in Henderson, Texas, graduating with the Class of 1976. Debra accepted Christ at an early age while attending Arlem Grove Baptist Church in Henderson. She was employed with Henderson Independent School District for 20 years until her retirement.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Wayne Strong, and son, Tramaine Strong in 2005 and 2009 respectively. Also preceding her in death her father, Governor Thurmond, Sr.; brothers Joe Roy, Governor, Jr. and Milton.
