Traverse City- Richard Aloysius "Dick" Courtad, 86 of Traverse City, died Saturday, May 20, 2006.
Dick was born March 24, 1920, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Aloysius and Nellie (Courtade) Courtad. On Feb. 22, 1944 he married Maxine L Loomis in Fort Custer.
Dick worked as a truck driver for Armour & Co in Grand Rapids and Traverse City, and as an auto mechanic for Grand Traverse Auto. He retired from Cone Drive Gear as a machinist in 1980.
Dick was a leader of 4-H Club for 15 years. He served on the Almira Township Board as a trustee and was fire chief on the original Almira Township Fire Department. He held office in Cone Drive Credit Union; was a Red Cross first-aid instructor; defense coordinator with Grand Traverse County and Almira Township.; and served as a deputy sheriff in Almira Township for Benzie County.
In recent years, Dick held offices of Chairman and Treasurer of the Grand Traverse Area UAW Retirees, and Chairman of Michigan Northwest Lower Peninsula UAW Workers Council, covering nine lower Michigan Counties.
Dick served in the United States Army 88th Field Hospital during World War II in Okinawa. He was honorably discharge with the rank of S/Sgt.
Surviving is his wife of 62 years, Maxine; children, Douglas Courtad, Carol (John) Fitzgerald, Mary (Dale) Dort and Susan (Jim) Childs; six grandchildren, Bobbi (Troy) Scott, Tammy (Jeremy) Clous, Alanna (Eric) Fant, Shawn Fitzgerald, Angela and Chirstina Childs; five great-grandchildren, Austin and Emily Scott, Tyler and Josie Clous, and Lillian Fant, all of the Traverse City area. Also survivin are two brothers, Rugene and Al Courtad of Traverse City; and six sisters, Marie Keaton, Eileen (Rich) Newman, Pat (Jim) Franke, Geraldine (William) Smith, all of Traverse City, Joan (Luke) Romis of Ohio and Dolores Kress of Illinois.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, A.H. and Nellie Courtad; brothers, Kennedth, Donald and Bernard Courtad, sister Rita; and grandson Scott Dort.
Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 24, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Fr. James Hayaden officiating. Interment will follow in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday, May 23 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions in memory of Dick be made to Veterans Memoiral, c/o Almira Township, 7276 Ole White Dr, Lake Ann, MI 49650.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral Home, Traverse City.
