Three Graves at Hillside Cemetery, Canisteo, Steuben Co., NY

By Perry Streeter ([email protected]) 21 August 2017
In honor of Charles A. Page on the 111th anniversary of his death

In Hillside Cemetery, Canisteo, Steuben County, New York, there are three adjacent markers of the same style. Only the given name is engraved on the top of each one; and only one of them includes any dates on the front.

Sarah
Charles
Susan 1818-1890

The evidence presented further below suggests that these are probably the grave markers of the individuals listed below with their Find A Grave Memorial Numbers and their relationships to each other:

Sarah H. (Nicholson) Page [134920759], first wife of Charles A. Page.
Charles A. Page [154133549], son of Buel Mariner & Susan J. (Hazard) Page.
Susan J. (Hazard) Page [134920811], wife of Buel Mariner Page & mother of Charles A. Page.

1870: The family of Buel Mariner and Susan J. (Hazard) Page, including their son, Charles A. Page, originally of Yates Co., NY, is not found in US census, which may indicate that they were in transition.

1 November 1871: Buel Page was admitted to the Steuben County Poor House in Bath, NY with the cause of dependence recorded as “Fits” (perhaps Epilepsy) and a probable destiny of “Will not Recover.” That Buel was admitted to the poor house of Steuben County, rather than Yates County, may imply that the family had already become residents of Steuben Co., NY.

7 April 1878: Buel Page—along with many others—died in a tragic fire at the Steuben County Poor House. The newspaper article stated the cause of his confinement as “fits and blind.” If his remains were recovered for burial, his grave site is unknown.

1 June 1875: The family of Charles A. and Sarah (Nicholson) Page was enumerated in the village of Canisteo, Steuben Co., NY in the NYS census. A Susan Page, presumed to be Susan J. (Hazard) Page, was enumerated elsewhere in Canisteo as a “Boarder” in the household of Amos Hammer with the occupation of “Tayloress” (sic, presumably a female tailor).

18 April 1878: Susan J. (Hazard) Page was identified as resident of Hornell, Steuben Co., NY in the proof and probate of the will of her sister, Theoda (Hazard) VanDeventer.

1880: The family of Charles and A. Sarah (Nicholson) Page was enumerated in Canisteo again but Susan J. (Hazard) Page is not found in the US census, which may indicate that she was, once again, in a transition.

8 December 1882: Sarah (Nicholson) Page, died and was buried in Hillside Cemetery, per her obituary in the Canisteo Times.

13 October 1886: Susan J. (Hazard) Page died in Canisteo and was buried in Hillside Cemetery, per Leora Wilson Drake (Town Historian), “Extracts from the funeral books of Justus Hitchcox of Canisteo, N.Y.” (1958), Hillside Cemetery:

“Susan J.Page-b. Milo, Yates Co., N.Y.-d.Canisteo,N.Y.,Oct.13,1886,ae 67yrs-res. of Charles Page-Old Grounds”

21 August 1906: Charles A. Page committed suicide in Canisteo and was buried in Hillside Cemetery on 23 August 1906, per Source: New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Vital Statistics, Certificate and Record of Death 34914:

“Place of Burial or Removal: Hillside Cem. Canisteo”
“Date of Burial: Aug 23 1906”
“Undertaker: Chas [Charles] P. Waite”
“Address: Canisteo NY”

Although the known life span of Susan J. (Hazard) Page (ca. 1819 - 13 October 1886) does not correspond perfectly with the grave marker for “Susan 1818-1890,” the dates are close enough to not rule out a match.

However, it is important to note that there are two other markers of the same style near the three markers of primary interest. The connection of the following individuals (if any) to Charles A. Page is unknown.

Benjamin S. 1814-1894
Murray A.

Given the ever-present possibility of recording and transcription errors, these markers may (or may not) pertain to the following father and son:

Benjamin S. McConnell (1817-1894)
Murray McConnell (1844-after 1870)

Murray resided in his father’s household in Canisteo 1870 but he did not in 1880.
