Alma Mason Hunley died peacefully in her home in Loveland, Colorado, on October 26, 2014, at the age of 101. Alma was born on October 22, 1913, in Spurgeon, Indiana, to Shelby and Mary (Doerner) Mason. She graduated from Oakland City High School in 1931 and married her high school sweetheart, Kenneth Hunley, in 1935. Together they lived west of Oakland City for 57 years, and following her husband's death, she continued living there until 2009, when she moved to Loveland, CO. She and Kenny were avid gardeners, and Alma continued that love of plants until her passing, maintaining multiple indoor and outdoor flowers as well as a prosperous tomato plant on her patio. She also worked at Republic Aviation in Evansville during World War II as a riveter on the P-47 Thunderbolt Fighter Plane, a true 'Rosie the Riveter'!
Alma is survived by a son, Steve Hunley (Kathy) of Loveland, CO; three grandchildren, Chris Hunley (Dilyana) of Siena, Italy, Kelly Hunley of Somerville, MA, and Jenny Peifer (Josh) of Denver, CO; nieces, Marlene Shelton of Newburgh, Teresa Riley of Louisville, KY, Lynette Logsdon (Earl Meyers) of St. Louis, MO, Lucretia Houchins (Ron) and Pam Fetcher (Mike) both of Francisco, Mary Hall of Murfreesboro, TN, Vonnie Jean Holland of Petersburg, Oleva James (Gerald) of Aurora, Pat Andrews of Louisville, KY, Sue Van Buren (Peter) of Baltimore, MD, and Mary Jane Rice (John) of Boone, NC.; nephews, Alan Whitman (Joyce) of Oakland City, Larry Whitman (Sharon) of Oakwood, IL, Darrell Whitman (Angie) of Bicknell, and David Hunley (Colraine) of Furlong, PA. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Kenneth in 1994; two brothers, Chester and Edward Mason; five sisters, Lora Ropp, Elnora Whitman, Dora Grubb, Eliza Austin and Phyllis Riley.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 1st at 10 a.m. at Lamb-Basham Memorial Chapel in Oakland City, IN. Funeral services will be held graveside at Montgomery Cemetery in Oakland City following the visitation. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Montgomery Cemetery Fund at PO Box 42, Oakland City, IN 47660. The family would like to thank the staff of the Wexford Independent Living Facility for their support during Alma's residence in Loveland, CO.
