"BALL, HARRIETT - Harriett Ball, a longtime resident, of Nanuet, NY, died at Nyack Hospital, Thursday, July 27, 2006 after a brief illness. She was 88 years old. Mrs. Ball was born August 19, 1917 in Westminster West, VT to Harry A. and Mabel (Richardson) Barnes. She spent her childhood in Saxton's River, VT and graduated from Bellows Falls (VT) High School in 1935. In 1939 she graduated from Middlebury College, Middlebury, VT with a BA degree in French. She was married on October 30, 1948 to Edwin Ball, of Maxwell, IA, who preceded her in death in 1979. After graduating from college, Harriett began a career in secondary education, teaching foreign languages in Chittenango, NY, Pearl River, NY and finally Nanuet, NY. She retired from Nanuet High School in 1978 after 18 years. At Nanuet, Mrs. Ball was active as a mentor for many student organizations. She was especially involved with the American Field Service and a host parent for three exchange students. She also continued her education while a teacher, earning her MA degree. In recent years, Harriett divided her time between Nanuet and the family farm in Vermont, where she helped her brother grow and market produce. Locally, she was active in the congregation of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Pearl River, the American Association of University Women, and numerous volunteer groups. Harriett will be remembered for her selflessness in helping others, her warmth and good humor, and her patience and dedication to her students and family. She is survived by her two children: Carl (Patricia) Ball, of Shorewood, WI and Jane (Thomas) Ketcham, of Big Flats, NY; three grandchildren: Rebecca (Jonathan) Green, of Tucson, AZ; and Edwin and Stephen Ketcham, of Big Flats, NY; one great-grandchild, Grace Green, of Tucson, AZ; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Edwin Ball and her siblings: Richard and Elizabeth Barnes. Visiting hours will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 pm on Sunday, July 30, 2006 at Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home, Inc. The Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 pm Monday, July 31, 2006 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Pearl River, NY. Interment will be in Saxton's River, Vermont, August 1, 2006. Memorial Donations may be made in Mrs. Ball's name to: Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Pearl River, NY; Christ's Church, Saxton's River, VT; and Middlebury College, Middlebury, VT.
