Abel Backman, 86, passed away May 3, 1991. A resident of Puget Sound area for the past 68 years. As a foundry worker, he was a member of the Northwest Foundry Workers Union.

He was the husband of Beatrice Emelia Ostrom Backman who died in 1978.

He is survived by numerous nephews, nieces, and friends in the area. Viewing will be Sunday in the Mountain View Funeral Home, Tacoma. Service 3:00 p.m. Monday in the Mountain View Garden Chapel, Tacoma. Viewing will be at Evergreen-Washelli Funeral Home, Seattle, Monday evening and Tuesday morning. Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Evergreen-Washelli Cemetery, Seattle. Arrangements by Mountain View Funeral Home, Tacoma.

Abel arrived in New York on October 3, 1927 from Sweeden and made his way to Washington by 1935. He lived on a place that had a big cherry orchard, and the family would get to pick buckets full. He loved to watch hydroplane races on Lake Washington. The sound of the roaring engines and the name "Miss Budwiser" stand out in one family member's memories.

According to family, he was a great guy who would get misty eyed when he reminisced about the reindeer in Sweden. It was said that he took part in boxing to earn his way across the United States. He wasn't a tall man, but he was very strong and built solidly with very large strong hands. He was an avid gardener and raised beautiful flowers and maintained his yard impeccably.
