Dorothy Cleo Cawthon, age 82, passed away on Friday, October 16, 2015, and her husband, Donald 'Duck' Cecil Cawthon, age 89, passed away on Sunday, October 18, 2015. They were residents of the Keystone Heights, Melrose, FL, area since 1970.
Dorothy was born in Waycross, Georgia, on April 9, 1933, to the late Cleveland and Hattie Mae (Dixon) Smith.
Donald was born in Florala, Alabama, on November 6, 1925, to the late Edward and Vinnie Morris Cook.
Donald and Dorothy were members of Eliam Baptist Church in Melrose for 45 years and were always involved in activities of the church. They were committed to their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and served Him faithfully.
Donald and Dorothy were married June 3, 1967. They blended their family to include Patricia Griggs, spouse Gene, Altamonte Springs, FL; Michael Strickland, spouse Bev, New London, IA; Donna Blakely, spouse Dick, Jacksonville, FL; BJ Strickland, Earleton, FL. In retirement they traveled on cruises, to the mountains, to Alaska many times and just enjoyed being with family and friends.
Dorothy grew up in Waycross, GA. She completed cosmetology school in the 1960s to become a beautician and so many walked out of Dot's Beauty Nook looking beautiful. She created loving friendships that lasted many generations. She loved to be outside gardening and everything she touched grew. She gathered plant seeds in pill bottles when traveling and add them to her garden at home. There are many yards with plants and flowers propagated by Miss Dot and citrus trees from Donald Duck. She had so many creative talents which included sewing, cooking and baking, painting, furniture restoration and music. Many brides cut their wedding cake made by Miss Dot. She could fix just about anything and would not give up until she figured it out. She had a special way with animals and leaves behind many beloved granddogs.
Donald was a true Gator and enjoyed many sports. He proudly wore #33 as a quarterback for the University of Florida Gators. At home he was the boss of the Chinese Honey trees and vegetable garden. If he couldn't eat it, he didn't water it and often heard about it later from Miss Dot. Whether fishing for the big one or coaching a ball team, he was patient and kind. He was fun-loving and a silly quip was always ready on the tip of his tongue. Often the teacher, he shared his life experiences.
In addition to his names of 'Donald' and 'Don,' he was affectionately known as 'Duck,' 'Donald Duck,' 'Mingamaw,' 'Papa Duck,' and 'PePaw.' Just like Miss Dot, he had a gentle spirit, was never boastful and gave to others without ever expecting anything in return. Helping and serving others was their true calling.
Donald and Dorothy were preceded in death by their grandson Jack Blakely and great granddaughter Kali Ringold; brother Joe Smith and spouse, Myrtice; and two brothers-in-law, Dub Hendrix and Clois Strickland. Survivors of Dorothy include her siblings: Yvonna Hendrix; Benny Smith and spouse Barbara; and Wanda Strickland, all of Waycross, GA. Donald is preceded in death by his brothers Ed, Jack, Tiny Bug, Bill, Joe and Lynn and sisters-in-law Helen, Gladys, Mavis and Joanne. Other survivors of Donald include his sister Helen Laritz and spouse John of Pensacola, FL, and sister-in-law Pansy Cawthon of Jacksonville, FL. Surviving grandchildren include Tori Frazee, Wesley Griggs, Brian Griggs, Matt Blakely, Missy Chipman and Chris Ringold.
