May 15, 1853, they and 3 of their children, Charles, Sophie and Henriette left for America. Their oldest son, Fredrick Wilhelm, left for New York, NY with his wife Louise Oct 27, 1854. Within a couple years they had all settled in Clayton Co., Iowa. The father, Johann, passed away there in 1863. The two daughters married and remained in Clayton County. The two sons moved west, Fred Wilhelm [with his 2nd wife & 3 kids] to Nebraska in 1866, and Charles [with his wife & 2 kids] to Kansas in 1868. Some years later the mother, Magdalena [Caroline], came west to live with her sons & their families.

"Schröder: Mother Magdalena Schröder joined God and his people, as we hope. Mother Sch. died at the house of one of her sons. She was a member of our congregation in Preston, Nebraska, and died at the age of 82 years, 11 months, and 9 days. The disease which she only had to suffer from for a few days was dysentery. Four children mourn her death. May God unite them all again in front of his throne!"
