"Sylvester J. Lucas, whose sudden death from apoplexy was announced in these columns Friday, was born in South Bend in 1855. He was the son of Nancy Lucas, the oldest sister [actually 2nd eldest of five sisters] of the Studebaker brothers.

At an early age he entered the employ of his uncles to learn the trade of a painter and for the past 20 or more years has been a foreman of the wagon branch of the Studebaker Bros. Mfg. Co. He was a master of his trade and was a very industrious, painstaking, conscientious and faithful employee, efficient and capable in the responsible position held by him for so many years.

His genial temper and kindly heart made him a favorite with all who knew him and an uncommonly wide circle of acquaintances and friends learned of his sudden demise with unaffected sorrow. He leaves a wife and three children. The latter are Dr. Robert Lucas, of this city; Edgar Lucas of Lewiston [prob Lewistown], Mont., and George Lucas, the latter a child of ten years. Funeral at 9 o'clock Monday morning at St. Patrick's church."

DeGroote officiating and a large number of relatives and friends being in attendance. The floral decorations were very elaborate, among them being several set pieces from the Studebaker works, including one from his fellow employes. The burial was at Cedar Grove cemetery."
