Parish records of St. James Catholic Church, Colgan, Ontario, Canada. James is buried at the Catholic Cemetery of Mount Calvary, Portland, Oregon. It is believed that his son, Michael Philabre Ferguson (1873-1937), who lived in Portland, made the decision to have his father buried there. James had lived alone on a small farm near Fern Hills, outside of Tacoma, Washington. When he was not seen around the place for a day or so, his neighbours investigated, and found him dead, kneeling beside his bed. He had apparently died in the act of saying his nightly devotions.
