On March 5, 2008, we were forced to say goodbye to our beautiful baby girl. McKenzie Rose was taken from us by a rare, malignant brain tumor. She was 11 months old. McKenzie was diagnosed with an Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor (AT/RT) which is a rare and highly malignant childhood brain tumor with a high mortality rate. In the United States 3 children per 1,000,000 or around 30 new AT/RT cases are diagnosed each year. The survival rate for children diagnosed with AT/RT tumors is around 10%. Pediatric Brain cancer is the second leading cause of childhood death. McKenzie and our entire family were blessed with the care and compassion of the nurses at Akron Children's Hospital in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Their around-the-clock care, love, and respect for McKenzie, and our family cannot be described with just words. Based upon our appreciation we established the McKenzie Rose Garretson Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is designed to honor the work of the nursing staff of Akron Children's Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) responsible for the care of over 1300 acutely ill children annually. Advances in medical technology, procedure and services have resulted in the expansion of Pediatric Intensive Care Units-like the one at Akron Children's Hospital-thereby accentuating the need of an available cadre of intensive care nurses and critical care nurse practitioners. The primary goal of McKenzie's Legacy is to meet that need.
