1 January 1901 - The Hon. John J. Cassin, at his home in Albany; he was a well known citizen and politician and had spent most of his life in Rensselaer county; he was a native of Rensselaer, where he was born 57 years ago; he received his education in the public schools and was successful in various branches of business; he entered into politics in 1857 and was prominent in Democratic circles for a number of years; he began his political career as Supervisor from the old Greenbush district and was returned three times afterwards; he was three times elected Acting Superintendent of the Poor and was for two years a Member of the Assembly; he retired from politics a few years ago; he is survived by his wife, who was Miss Ellen Walsh, sister of the Rev. John Walsh of this city, and one daughter; a year ago his son was accidentally drowned while skating with companions near his home, and immediately afterwards Mr. and Mrs. Cassin moved from the house and resided thereafter in Albany.

He was a sibling of Michael, William, Catherine, Dennis John and Mary Elizabeth (Cassin) Owens (#26492115).
