CARLISLE - Helen Wells Pumphrey , 91, of Carlisle, died Thurs., Dec. 30, 2004 at Johnson-Mathers Health Care Center from complications of surgery. Services will be held at the Carlisle Christian Church in Carlisle on Mon., Jan. 3, 2005. Visitation will be from noon until 2 pm preceding the funeral.
Helen was raised near Carlisle and graduated from Carlisle High School. She married Hadden Pumphrey and lived much of her adult life in Illinois and Iowa before returning to Carlisle in recent years. She worked for many years as a Housekeeping Supervisor at the University of Iowa in Iowa City and was an avid Hawkeye fan.
She was active in her church, the Carlisle Hospital Auxiliary and Ellisville Homemakers.
Helen was born in Nicholas County to the late Dan E. and Elizabeth McClanahan Wells. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara VanKley Miller, and husband Richard, by grandsons James (Kim) VanKley and Jeff (Linda) VanKley, great-grandchildren Kaitlyn VanKley and Tyler VanKley and step-granddaughter, Sarah Miller as well as her sisters, Lucille Feeback and Elizabeth Cleaver. She will be missed by her many nieces, nephews and friends.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Hadden Pumphrey , three infant sons, sisters Katherine Wells and Margaret Anderson as well as her beloved schnauzers, Katie and JJ.
Casket bearers will be John and Danny Cleaver, Jimmy Dan Anderson, Mike and Chris Boone and Mark Taylor. Honorary bearers will be Woody Ring, Ben Pumphrey , Barry Ruark, Doug Buchanan, Ray Anderson and Ray Waggoner Jr.
