Gaither Eugene Hayes, 80, of Dock Connally Ln., Hiddenite, passed away, after a brief illness, on Saturday, November 7, 2015, at Gordon Hospice House, Statesville.
He was born March 26, 1935, in High Point, son of the late Henry Helton Hayes, Sr. and Virginia Drauughn Hayes. Mr. Hayes worked as a sewing machine mechanic in textile factories, and was of the Baptist faith.
He served in the United States Air Force for four years, and was a member of the DAV.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandniece and nephew.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 34 years, Betty Jean Pharr Hayes; a daughter, Kim Harwell and husband Joe of Statesville; three step-sons, Keith Mitchell and wife Carrie of Stony Point, Michael Mitchell and wife Thelma of Hiddenite, and Danny Mitchell and wife Tammy of Statesville; a brother, Henry Hayes, Jr. and wife Lois of Hiddenite; three sisters, Margaret Griffith and husband Ralph of Statesville, Helen Duncan of Statesville, and Lilian Estep of Stony Point; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at Pilgrim Baptist Church. Rev. Tony Daniels will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, November 9, 2015 at Chapman Funeral Home Chapel.
