Ellen "Ella" Wallace was the oldest child of William "Bill", age 27, and Levina (also spelled Lovinia, Lavinia) Wallace, age 25. We do not know our great-grandmother Levina's maiden name. Ella was born in NC. She remained single, according the information we have found about her. She had 1 sister, Matilda M. and 2 brothers William E. and James W. Wallace (my grandfather). After her mother died her father married Sarah Tucker. She had 5 more siblings, R. Henry, Cora Lee, Franklin Garfield, Lucy Jane "Janie" and Sidney "Sid" Harrison Wallace. She was the granddaughter of James E. and Keziah Knustep Wallace. Her dad was a Farmer. There Personal Real Estate was $50.00.

1860
We first find Ella in THE 1860 US FEDERAL CENSUS, page 1 of 14, lines 28-31, when she is 9 months old with her parents and her paternal grandmother, Keziah, whose husband, James E. Wallace had died. We do not know any other information, about her paternal grandfather, but his name is on the Marriage Certificate of her, father William and his second wife Sarah Tucker. The family was living in North of Hunting, Iredell County, NC. The Post Office was in Union Grove, NC. They were family # 6.

1870
We find her in THE 1870 US FEDERAL CENSUS, she is age 10, living with her parents and grandmother Keziah, and siblings, William, age 7, Matilda, age 5 and (my grandfather) James, age 1. This will be the last record of their family all being together. The Post Office was County Line. Their home was in the Turnersburg Township, Iredell, NC. Her dad is a Farmer, their Real Estate was worth $230.00.

1880
The family must have been having a really hard time. We find Ella in THE 1880 US FEDERAL CENSUS, page 7 of 11, line 11, in the Cherry Lane Township, Alleghany County, NC. She is age 20, living and working as a Servant in the home of Aaron, age 63, and his wife, Pheriba Woodruff, age 54. Mr. Woodruff is a Farmer.

In THE 1880 US FEDERAL CENSUS, page 11 of 28, line 46, we find her younger brother, James, age 10, living in the Bryne Township No. 4, Surry County, NC. He is living with David Stokes, age 19, David's two sisters, and a nephew and his mother, Louisa M. Stokes, age 58. James is listed as a Servant, as a Farm Laborer. Also, her sister Matida was living with a neighboring Stokes family, Lou M. Stokes, age 33, and her 2 young children. Matilda is listed as a Servant. These Stokes families possibly could have been related to their father's sister, Mary Maltilda Wallace who was married to Henry Stokes.

IN THE 1880 US FEDERAL CENSUS, page 2 of 40, lines 49 and 50, we find Ella's father, William E., Sr. and her brother William E., Jr. renting living quarters and working in Pilot Township, Surry County, NC. William Sr. working at a Sawmill and William Jr. is working as a Farm Laborer. In the Census, it is checked that William Sr. is married. I could not find where Ella's mother, Lavina was living. I think she may have died between 1883 to 1884. She may have died having baby R. Henry, born in 1883, or shortly afterward. Levina is very mysterious. We have no proof of when she died or where she is buried. William marries Sarah Tucker in 1885. He was 50 and she was 20.

1890
History skips over THE 1890 US FEDERAL CENSUS, due to a tragic fire that destroyed most of THE US FEDERAL CENSUSES.

1900
We find her in the 1900 US Federal Census, she is age 41, living in the Bryan District, Surry County, N.C., with her sister, Maltida M. Wallace, age 35, and Matilda's children, Charles C., age 15, Walter L., age 7, and Russel M. Wallace, age 3. It says that Matilda and her son, Charles, are Farmers.

1910
We find her this last time in THE 1910 US FEDERAL CENSUS, page 13 of 36, lines 13 and 14, Dobson District 0128, Surry, NC. Also, her sister Matilda (Matildy) is with her. They still cannot read or write. They are living at a Institution called "The Surry County Home". It says she and Matilda were 'Inmates'. Inmate did not mean, jail or prison, like we would think of today. It meant resident or patient.

During this time those who could not take care of themselves medically and or financially, nor have family that can take care of them, were put into County homes. Some of these were known as, THE POORHOUSE OR THE POOR FARM.

I do not know for sure if the following was their circumstances.

Poorhouse were tax-supported residential institutions to which people were required to go if they could not support themselves. They were started as method of providing a less expensive(to the taxpayers) alternative to what we would now days call "welfare"-what was called "outdoor relief" in those days. People requested help from the Community Overseer of the Poor (sometimes also call a Poor Master)-an elected town official. At times the "Superintendent or Overseer of the Poor" would make the decision if "someone" is to be at the County Home.

This one was located on Leobran and Mt. Airy Road. The Industry Manager of this 'farm' was James W. Norman. I have not found how long Ella was here, nor when she died and where she was buried. If a person did not have family that could take care of the burial, they would be buried in a "Pauper" cemetery, sometimes call THE POOR CEMETERY. Many times, people were buried in these cemeteries and no one recorded their burial. So, many times, it's impossible to find their burial place. (There's much more information concerning THE POOR HOUSE or THE COUNTY HOME, just go on line and type THE POOR HOUSE OR THE SURRY COUNTY HOME etc.)

We do find her sister Maltida in THE 1920 US FEDERAL CENSUS She is living with a young family, Lacy A. and Dora Norman, and their 5 children, ages 4 to 12. I'm not sure if they are related to James Norman(that managed THE SURRY COUNTY HOME, the sister were in, in 1910). On her Certificate of Death. She was employed by L. A. Norman. Her occupation was a House Woman. She was 60 years old. She was buried at Union Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Surry County, NC. This is the same cemetery that her employers, Lacy and Dora is buried at.

I have also, created FIND A GRAVE Memorials for some of the other family members, so I can connect them together. I do not have the name of the burial places for all of them, but I have records such as Censuses, Draft Records, Marriage and Death Certificates, etc. for each one I have posted. This loving project is still "under construction." Should anyone have more information I gladly welcome it.
