Sam was born June 24, 1927 in Washington, Iowa, the son of Aaron and Alpha M. (York) Batterson. He attended school in Washington and after his junior year, joined the Army Air Force. Sam was united in marriage to Frances Jane Owens on January 10, 1957 at Cotter.

Sam worked at the Curran Company for 27 years and for the McCleery Cumming Company for 23 years. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, sports and woodworking. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs fan. Sam coached a Cubs softball team in Washington for many years in the later 40’s and early 50’s. He also coached little league baseball.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Les Brecht; sister, Wanda Wilson; and four brothers: Elmer, James, Donald and Dale Batterson.
