Born in Territorial Florida, Arthur Macon was the second child of Arthur Macon and Martha Hardy Hawkins. Descended from the Macon family of North Carolina, he was the grandson of Gideon Hunt Macon Jr., (brother to Nathaniel Macon). With his father dying while he was very young, Arthur was raised by his stepfather James E. Broome, Sr. upon his mother's death in 1847.


In the 1850s, Arthur's stepfather was elected Governor of Florida. Arthur lived in Tallahassee. In December 1856, by Act of the Florida Legislature, Arthur Macon was emancipated at the age of 19 while he was a student at the University of Virginia. In January 1857, a series of events began that resulted in the Florida Supreme Court Case Tallahassee Railroad vs. Macon in 1859. By 1860, Arthur had an estate valued at $12,000.


After spending two years at military school in Marietta, Georgia, Arthur enlisting in the 1st Regiment, Florida Infantry in 1861. Arthur was wounded at Shilo and Chickamauga. In 1864, Arthur deserted the Confederate cause in Madison County, Florida.


On November 18, 1869 in Monticello, Jefferson County, Florida, Arthur married Annie Linton of Madison County, Florida. His former wealth gone, he was a farmer. He had eight children with Annie. Death details are missing, but it is thought he died around 1888.
