Surviving are his wife, Barbara, of Martinsburg; two sons: James Adams (Linda) and Timothy Adams, both of Altoona; three daughters: Cecilia Kruis (Gary) of Altoona, Teresa Adams of Bakersfield, Calif.; and Mary Beth Adams of Altoona; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Ted Adams of Altoona; and four sisters: Katherine Lauer of Altoona, Marjorie Kelley of Hollidaysburg, Lois Steinbugl of Altoona, and Joanne Schlect of Akron, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by four brothers: Robert, Paul, Chick, and Jack Adams.
James graduated from Altoona Catholic High School and attended Erie Institute of Technology. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, where he was stationed in Germany. He retired in 1994 from the Altoona Highway Yard and had previously worked for 10 years for the Pennsylvania Railroad and 10 years for F.L. Smithe Machine Company, Inc.
James was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Altoona, and also a member of the Cesare Battisti Club. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, playing pinochle, and traveling on winter getaways to Florida.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, October 30, 2015, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 31, 2015, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, officiated by Father Brian R. Saylor. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.
