The Rev. John P. Schlegel, S.J. (Society of Jesus--Jesuit), 72

July 30, 1943 ~ November 15, 2015

Raised in Dubuque, Iowa, Fr. Schlegel, who died Nov 15th, was one of six children born into a loving and devoted blue collar family.

From his parents he received his faith, learned the value of education and developed a solid work ethic.

He spent a year at Loras College before entering the Society of Jesus at St. Bonifacius, Minnesota, in 1963.

He earned degrees in philosophy and political science from St. Louis University, a degree in theology from the University of London and a doctorate in international relations from Oxford University.

He served as dean of Arts and Sciences at Rockhurst University and Marquette University and was executive vice president at John Carroll University. He was president of the University of San Francisco (1991-2000) and Creighton University (2000-2011).

In 2014, after 16 months as president and publisher of America Magazine in New York, he came to his last ministry as pastor of the Gesu Parish in Milwaukee.

Fr. Schlegel was an adventurous global traveler, an enthusiast for the performing arts and a great believer in the transformational power of a Jesuit education. Echoing Pedro Arupe’s observation: "We (Jesuits) chart our success by what our students become."

Left with memories are three sisters and their husbands; two brothers and their wives; twelve nieces and nephews and twenty-one grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Irma and Aaron Schlegel.

Visitation 4-6:30 pm Thursday, Nov. 19th at St. John Catholic Church on the Creighton University campus, Omaha, Nebraska, followed by a Wake from 6:30-7:15 pm. Mass of Christian Burial 10 am Friday, Nov 20th at St John Catholic Church. Interment, Holy Sepulchre.

"It says much about Schlegel's affection for Creighton and Omaha, and vice versa, that after being diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer in early 2015 while he was pursuing pastoral work at Marquette University, he chose to return to Omaha and the Creighton community."

A Rare Man of Great Humility
The staff here at the Siena-Francis House homeless shelter were very saddened to hear of the passing of Father John Schlegel. While Father Schlegel certainly deserves the many memorial accolades he's received, they don't say enough about the compassion he had for the poor. He was always interested in and concerned about the homeless families and individuals we serve, and eager to help our organization fulfill our mission.

One story conveys Father Schlegel's personal commitment. During dinner here at the Siena-Francis House one evening in 2001, I accidentally bumped into a volunteer wiping off a table. The volunteer turned out to be the recently installed Creighton president. I later learned that--following his workday on campus--Father Schlegel would often quietly slip down to the Siena-Francis House, don an apron, and make himself useful as a volunteer. And, over the 10-plus years he was Creighton president, I saw Father Schlegel in our dining room many, many times--serving our guests, helping return their dinner trays to the kitchen and wiping off tables. I suspect he helped service dinner to our homeless guests nearly 100 times.

In May of 2007, I was sharing this story with some Creighton seniors. Unfortunately, Father Schlegel overheard and later talked with/reprimanded me about it. He let me know, in no uncertain terms, that this volunteer activity was something he appreciated doing, but which was strictly between him and his Maker and "not for public consumption" (his words).

With the news of Father Schlegel's death, I am very happy to no longer comply with his wishes. Father Schlegel was a great man and close friend of the Siena-Francis House and the homeless men, women and children we serve. He will be deeply missed.
