husband of Margaret Greenleaf Dawes m. July 14, 1807 at Boston and son of Elizabeth (Greenleaf) and Samuel Eliot. Soon after marriage he moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts where he became a merchant ship owner. The war of 1812 ended all hope of his fortune being made any time soon with the embargo on maritime activity. Moving his family to Washington, D.C., the new capital he took a position with the Post Office. Education, long a family priority, he sent his sons home to New Bedford at the Friends Academy. Thomas Dawes Eliot, the eldest son was graduated in 1822 from Columbian College (today George Washington University) after which he returned to New Bedford to practice law and where he was an active member of the Unitarian Church. William Greenleaf Eliot, Jr. went on to be ordained to the Unitarian ministry after being graduated from Harvard University. He went on to found the First Unitarian Church in Saint Louis, Missouri and Washington University.
