Bernardo C. "Bennie" Castro, Sr., 83 of Corpus Christi, passed away on Thursday, February 5, 2004 at his residence with his loving family by his side.

He was born on November 5, 1920 to the late Jose Angel and Maria Rita (Covarrubias) Castro.

Bennie, Sr., lived in Corpus Christi all his life. In December of 1979, he retired after 30 years of service from Corn Products Refinery. In 1981, he went to work for Del Mar College (East Campus) and retired after 10 years of service in January 1991.

He served in the United States Army during World War II with the 88th (Blue Devil) Division in Italy. Taking part in the Rome, Arno River, and Po Valley Campaigns. Bennie, Sr. was among the first troops to enter Rome when it was liberated. He received the European Theater of Operation Ribbon with 2 clusters and Infantry Badge and also received the Distinguished Unit Citation Ribbon for the battle during the drive to the Arno River (Presidential Citation) and the Good Conduct Ribbon. Defended our great country from 1942-1945.

One daughter, Juanita Castro, precedes him in death.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Mrs. Manuela B. Castro; four sons, Bernardo B. Castro, Jr. (Dolores) of Arlington, Texas, Luis M. Castro (Irma) of Corpus Christi; Jose Antonio "Tony" Castro (Maria Clemencia) of San Antonio, Texas and Carlos E. Castro of Corpus Christi; eleven grandchildren; Sara, Aimee, Benjamin, Jennifer, Amanda, Jessica, Luis, Catherine, Antoinette, Elisha and Marinela; four great-grandchilden, Michael, Alyssa, Joshua and Jesse.

Visitation was held February 9 and 10. A rosary was recited on February 10. All services held at Memory Gardens Funeral Home. Funeral Mass was celebrated on February 11 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment followed at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
