Effingham relatives and old time friends were grieved to hear of the sudden and unexpected death of Mrs. Joe Cruise, Friday, November 13, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chester Belden, in Topeka.
A baby was born last week to Mr. and Mrs. Belden and Mrs. Cruise had gone to Topeka to care for the other Belden children while Mrs. Belden was in the hospital. She was enjoying her usual good health Thursday. Friday morning, she arose at 4 o'clock morning and went down stairs to get a drink for one of the Belden children. When her son-in-law arose at 6 o'clock he found her dead. She had lain down on a couch in the living room.
Mrs. Cruise remembered by many as Katie O'Neil, was born in the section house, at Whiting, Kans., October 28, 1869, the daughter of Kansas pioneers. Her father, the late Michael O'Neil, built the first 100 miles of Missouri Pacific tracks west from Atchison.
Her parents wre born in Ireland. Their marriage took place in Washington, D. C. The father's railroad work finally landed him in this section of Kansas. After retiring from the railroad, the O'Neil's purchased a farm southeast of Whiting where they resided many years. Mrs. O'Neil passed away thirty-eight years ago (sic) and Mr. O'Neil fourteen years later (sic).
Dec. 29, 1891, Kate O'Neil and Joseph Cruise were united in marriage at St. Leo's church, in Horton. The writer of this sketch, although a little girl, attended the "infare", now known as the reception, given by the neighbors and many friends of this popular young couple.
To Mr. and Mrs. Cruise were born three children, Mrs. Chester Belden, Topeka; two sons, Joseph Cruise, Klamath Falls, Ore., and Leo Cruise, who lived with his mother in a home near the Straight Creek station between Whiting and Horton. Five grandchildren and several other relatives are left to mourn her departure. Mr. Cruise passed away in February. Mrs. Cruise was the last surviving child of the O'Neil family. A small brother and sister died in Washington, D. C. A brother Wm O'Neil, of Wichita, two sisters, Mrs. Maggie Smith, of Severy, and Mrs. Mary Fiester, of Whiting have also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Cruise is remembered as a very pretty girl. She was a good wife and mother. Thoughtful of others in times of sickness and sorrow, and kindness personified. She rightfully earned the reward of being taken away from this world into a better one without a lingering illness.
Funeral services were held at St. Dominic's church, in Holton, Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock.
Interment was made in St. Ann's cemetery, at Effingham, beside the remains of her husband and parents. Father Cosmas had charge of the services. Pall bearers were John Spence, Horton; Frank Kelly, Kalamazoo, Mich.; Ed Staeglan, Holton; Ernest Corcoran, Whiting; Tom Grannell and Earl Whitecraft, Netawaka.
Mr. Kelly came all the way from Michigan to act as body bearer for Mrs. Cruise. She was his Godmother when he was christened.
The son Joe, Jr., who came from Oregon to attend his mother's funeral services, will remain awhile as will Mr. Kelly whose mother and other relatives live at Whiting.
It was estimated around fifty cars of relatives and old time friends, who attended the services in Holton accompanied the remains to Effingham.
