Edition dated 9/30/1976, Andrew Jackson Hall Sr. and his family were the first
to settle in Canoe, Alabama before it became Escambia County. He moved here from
the northern edge of what is now Oak Grove, Escambia Co., Florida prior to his
4th son Wiley's birth in 1852. He was credited for naming the little settlement
around the railroad station known as Canoe Station after Canoe Creek, no doubt
christened by Indians who roamed this area before the white man came. His first
home was a large old wood frame house which stood until the early 1970s slightly
northwest of where the water tower stands today. He married Mary Lucinda
Entrekin Vickery, a widow with 3 children. More about the history of Canoe:
The town of Canoe is located on Canoe Creek, Alabama from which its name is
derived, and situated on the L&N Railroad, five miles north of Atmore. It had
its beginning in 1852 when Andrew Jackson Hall (1820-1885) and his family moved
from Oak Grove, Florida, just across the state line, bought land and settled
here.
