William Robert Hawkins

Vansant, Va. - William Robert Hawkins, 59, of Vansant, passed away Sunday, July 4, 2004, following a brief illness.

Born in Marion, N.C., he was a son of Naomi McGee Hawkins of Glenwood, N.C. and the late Everett Herman Hawkins.

He had been a resident of Buchanan County, Va. for several years, a member of the Southern Baptist Church in Marion, N.C. and a retired surveyor.

He served in the United States Army attaining the rank of E-7 Drill Sergeant having served in Desert Storm with the 1032 Transportation.

While in service he received the Army Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal W/10LC, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal W/2Stars, Sharpshooter Badge (M16 Rifle).

He was a 32nd degree Mason with the Sinking Creek Lodge No. 575, a member of the Jericho Shriners Scottish Rites of Kingsport, Tenn., a member of Mystic Tie Lodge AF & AM Marion, N.C. A lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 59 where he served as the Past and the Present Commander.

He was a member of the John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the American Legion Color Guard, the National Guard of Tennessee and the Jericho Shriners Scottish Rights Color Guard, and a commissioned Kentucky Colonel.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Dean Hawkins; and one special nephew, Ricky Dean Hawkins.

He is survived by his wife, Pansy D. Hawkins of Vansant; his mother: Naomi McGee Hawkins of Glenwood, N.C.; one son: Michael Hawkins of Johnson City, Tenn.; one stepdaughter: Andrea and husband: Dwayne Belcher of Elkhorn City, Ky.; one stepson: Daniel Deel of Coeburn, Va.; two sisters: Margaret Fender of Nebo, N.C. and Irene and husband: Roger Clark of Crossmore, N.C.; one sister-in-law: Flo Hawkins of Campbellsville, Ky.; two brothers: John and wife: Becky Hawkins of Elkins, N.C. and Everett Herman Hawkins Jr. of Lenoir, N.C.

Funeral services for William Robert Hawkins will be conducted at 7 p.m. today at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Ministers: Michael Boyd, Terry Colley, Darrell Thacker and Toby Bailey officiating with burial to follow Thursday at 1 p.m. in the Mountain Home Veterans Cemetery in Johnson City, Tenn.

Friends called at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Masonic Rites will be conducted today at 7 p.m. by members of the Sandy Valley Lodge No. 17 A.F. & A.M. of Grundy followed by the funeral services. Friends and family will meet at the Mountain Home Veterans Cemetery, Johnson City, Thursday at 1 p.m. for Military Rites and Interment.

Active pallbearers will be Daniel Deel, Leo Bailey, John Riley Gibbs, Dwayne Belcher, Dickie Belcher, Earl Scott, Roger Clark Jr., and John Riley Hawkins.

Honorary pallbearers will be T.C. Mullins Jr., Curtis R. Mullins, Rick Quesenberry, Joey Davis, Shane Hillman, Chad Barton, Rocky Barton, Leon St. Clair, Keith McClanahan, Ken Johnson, Sidney T. Deel, Mike Bailey, Bobby Ramey, Timothy McClanahan, Kenneth Adkins, Daniel Alhoss, Freddie Brown, Dean 'Kingfish' Elliott, Arnold Bailey, Lynn Neil and George Baker.

Full Military Rites will be conducted at the cemetery by members of Troop F, 2nd/278th Armored Cavalry Regiment.

The family suggests that Expressions of Sympathy may be made in the form of donations to: Jericho Shrine Temple for: Crippled Children, 1100 Sam Walton Drive, P. O. Box 5548, Kingsport, TN 37663.

Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy, Va. is in charge of all
arrangements.
