Cameron S. "Jack" Johnson, 84, of the Swaburg/Uehling area, died Thursday, April 14, 2005, in Manhattan, Kan.
He was born Sept. 27, 1920, in rural Washington County, Neb. to August and Carrie (Larson) Johnson. He grew up living with his parents and other relatives in Burt, Dodge and Washington counties. He graduated from Blair High School and later worked at a local hardware business. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945, during World War II. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He married Eunice Marie Bergquist on June 20, 1948, at Elim Lutheran Church in Swaburg. He began farming on his own. The couple lived on several farms before settling in northern Dodge County. He worked for Farmers Union Cooperative in Winslow and Goodyear Tire Co. in Fremont during the 1960s. He was part of the maintenance staff for Midland Lutheran College in Fremont from 1970-1979. His spouse died January 1978. He later married Evelyn Daubert in July of 1983. He retired in 1985, ending 40 years of farming. His wife died in July 1986. He then moved into Uehling. After having a stroke in 1997, he moved to Manhattan, Kan. to live with his daughter and her friend. He was a member of Elim Lutheran Church of Swaburg and Nebraska American Legion Post in Craig.
Survivors include: his daughter, Anne Johnson of Manhattan, Kan. and her good friend, Tiny Thornhill; a son, Jack Johnson of South St. Paul, Minn.; and a sister, Vivian Johson of Blair.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Virginia; and four brothers, Clifford, Clyde, Carroll and Curtis.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Elim Lutheran Church in Swaburg (southeast of Uehling) with the Rev. Robert Larson officiating. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Ludvigsen Mortuary in Fremont with family receiving friends from 2-4 p.m. Visitation continues one hour prior to service time at the church. Burial will be in Elim Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association and Good Samaritan Center in Scribner.
