Edward L. "Eddie" Robinson, a local history buff who "could describe in detail what happened years ago" and collected Jacksonville memorabilia, died Friday, January 12, 1996, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield. He was 61.
He was a longtime member of the Morgan County Historical Society. A lifelong Jacksonville resident, he attended Jacksonville High School and Illinois College. Mr. Robinson attended Washington University in St. Louis and Drake University School of Lawn in Des Moines. He took over the family farms throughout Morgan County and raised cattle after his parents died. He "was going to be one thing first, a farmer", said longtime friend and former Morgan County Sheriff Henry Jackson. He was proud of that.
Mr. Robinson was born Dec. 10, 1934 in Jacksonville, a son of Carl E. and Ruth Ann Leach Robinson. His father was a former Morgan County State's Attorney and a member of the Illinois House of Representatives. In 1946, Carl Robinson joined the law firm that is now Rammelkamp, Bradley, Dahman, Kuster, Keaton, Fritsche, and Lindsay. Mr. Robinson was the last of his immediate family and is survived by several cousins. He was preceded in dath by a brother, John L. Robinson, who died in World War II. "He was his own person", said another friend, Jack Finch. More than one person described Eddie Robinson as "eccentric".
"He was a little more than eccentric". Mr. Jackson said. "But he was a loyal, trustworthy man." Mr Robinson was often seen with his black Labrador Retriever Joe Louis and was widely known as a collector of guns and Jacksonville memorabilia. He was active in Phi Alpha Literary Society at Illinois College and was a life member of the National Rifle Society. What people talked most about Mr. Robinson was his love of history and a good tale. "Im going to miss him", Mr. Jackson said, "I wont have anybody to come by and spin yarns and talk history with".
Services were entrusted to Gillham-Buchanan Funeral Home of Jacksonville, Illinois.
Eddie is buried on the Robinson Family Lot, along with his father; Carl E. Robinson (1886 - 1964), his mother; Ruth Ann (Leach) Robinson (1891 - 1950); and his brother who died in service as a pilot with the US Army; Captain John Leach Robinson (1918 - 1943)
