US Army Officer. He enlisted in the New York National Guard in 1916, and served on the Texas-Mexico Border during the Pancho Villa Expedition. He rose to the rank of 1st Sergeant as a member of the 27th Division in World War I, and was wounded twice and gassed once. He later served as an observer with units of the British Army. He received an active duty commission in October 1918, and after the war served in Puerto Rico and Panama. While in Panama he married Betty Conner, the daughter of General Fox Conner, and Dwight Eisenhower was a member of the wedding party. Vida served with Infantry units at Fort Benning, at the Fort Benning Infantry School, and with units in Alaska. During World War II he served on the staff of the Infantry School, received promotion to Colonel, and commanded the school's Provisional Truck Regiment. He was a graduate of the Tank Officers Course, Infantry Officers Course, and Command and General Staff College. He retired in 1948, and his decorations included the Distinguished Service Cross, Purple Heart, British Distinguished Conduct Medal, French Croix de Guerre, and New York State Conspicuous Service Cross.
