Joseph Wright Alsop, III was the son Joseph Wright Alsop, Jr. and the former Miss Mary Caroline Oliver. Young Joseph was baptized on the 24th day of October 1839 at Christ Church in Middletown, Connecticut. His father was a prominent merchant trader.

Young Joseph attended Wesleyan University in 1858; Sheffield Scientific School at Yale in 1860, and graduated from New York Univeristy Medical School in 1861.

He married Miss Elizabeth Winthrop Beach on May 19th 1869 in New York City.

This union was blessed with the following known children:

Elizabeth Winthrop Beach Alsop 1874–1893
Joseph Wright Alsop IV 1876–1953

Dr. Alsop served in state Legislature for several terms and as a practicing veterinarian served on several agricultural committees in the Connecticut State Legislature.

In later life, Dr. Joseph W. Alsop III, a democrat, served in the state Senate and was involved in the political deadlock over the gubernatorial election of 1891. After giving an impassioned speech, he collapsed at the rostrum and died of a heart attack at his summer home in Fenwick on June 24th 1891.
