Eugene C. Schwantz, age 80, a resident in the town of Newton, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday morning, November 21, 2015, at the family residence. Eugene was born on March 17, 1935 in Potter, Wisconsin. He was the son of the late Reuben A. and Esther E. (Weiss) Schwantz. Eugene was a graduate of Lincoln High School with the class of 1953. On June 1, 1957 he married the former Marlys Grosshuesch at Salem Ebenezer Reformed Church in the town of Newton. Together they built a successful farm and celebrated over 58 years of marriage. In addition to farming, he enjoyed spending time up north in Upper Michigan and took pleasure in woodworking. Eugene was a member of the Newton Volunteer Fire Department for 24 years having served as Fire Chief for six of those years. He also was a long time member of Salem Ebenezer Reformed Church having served in past years on the church building committee. He is survived by his wife of 58 years: Marlys; one daughter and son-in-law: Jodi and Jared Bremer, Manitowoc/Hawaii; two sons and one daughter-in-law: Jeff Schwantz, Manitowoc; Jon and Annette Schwantz, Appleton; five grandchildren: Lydia Bremer, Morgan Schwantz, Carl Bremer, Mikaela Schwantz, and Michi Schwantz; one sister and brother-in-law: Karen and Bob Bohm, Tolleson, AZ; two sisters-in-law: Beatrice Jost and Shirley Dill, both of Manitowoc; one brother-in-law: Bill (Barb) Grosshuesch, Manitowoc; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Preceding him in death were his parents: Reuben and Esther Schwantz; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Elmer and Elsie Grosshuesch; one sister and brother-in-law: Marilyn and Paul Dannenberg; and two brothers-in-law: Harold Jost and Wilbert Dill.Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 28, 2015 at Salem Ebenezer Reformed Church,6524 County Road C, Manitowoc. Officiating will be Reverend Kyle Sorensen with burial to follow at the church cemetery.
