Mary Caroline Alsop, a daughter of Richard Alsop Jr. and the former Miss Mary Wyllys Pomeroy, was born in the bounds of Middletown, Connecticut in September 1791. Her parents were both from old families in the area.
In 1810, Mary married Francis Johonnot Oliver, a prominent businessman from Boston. This union was blessed with the following children:
