George Stewart Johonnot Oliver, only son of Francis Johonnot Oliver and the former Miss Mary Charlotte Jackson, was born on April 29th 1831 in Boston. His father was leading businessman and warden at King's Chapel. He was educated at Chauncy-Hall School, class of 1840 and graduated Class of 1851 from Harvard.

On December 8th 1859, George married Miss Frances Alsop Dabney, daughter of Charles William Dabney, U.S. Consulate to Portugal and granddaughter to John Bass Dabney, who was appointed by Thomas Jefferson to the same post. No known children were born to this union.

George Oliver worked in the Dabney family shipping and trading business. Keeping his in-laws company in political matters, and served as American vice-Consul though records indicate he was "Consul for the German Empire" for the Azores.

When he retired, George and Frances moved to Santa Barbara; where the climate was similar to the Azores. Here they lived in the home they built call "Rock Nook" on nine acres in the Mission Canyon.

George Stewart Johonnot Oliver departed this life on the 27th of December 1904 at the age of 73. His wife commissioned George Robson to build a memorial made of three large sandstone boulders: one is craved a water trough, one a drinking fountain and the other he placed this plaque: "In Memory of George Stuart Johannot Oliver – who loved this Canyon – 1910."
