Minnie Lee (Cowlishaw) Smiley was born on March 18, 1872 in Clarksville, Tennessee, the daughter of William David Cowlishaw (1835–1911) and his wife Sarah Jane (Powell) Cowlishaw (1837–1902).

She attended schools in Clarksville and moved to Nashville about 1890. She was also active in Eastwood Christian Church.

Minnie was married Fire Department Captain James Henry Smiley (1867-1939), the son of John Smiley and Rebecca (Ferguson) Smiley.

Living at 1307 Gartland Avenue, Nashville, she was 75 years old and a widow when she died at home on June 22, 1947 of a subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Survivors included daughters Mary Alice Smiley and Mrs Felix T Peach, granddaughter Mrs Nancy (Peach) Kizer, a great-grandson and her sister Mrs L F Gasser of Louisville, Kentucky.

Funeral Services were held at the Smiley home, and burial was on June 24th in Spring Hill Cemetery, Nashville.
