JOHNSON CITY Robert S. Lacey, 95, formerly of Bristol Highway, Johnson City, died after a long illness at Baysmont, Asbury on Jan. 30, 2008.
He was the son of the late Robert S. Lacey, Sr., and Nannie Morrell Lacey of Carter County.
Mr. Lacey was a graduate of Cloudland High School and East Tennessee State University (then State Teachers College). He worked as a Chemist at Bemberg, Elizabethton, for 40 years. He then finished his long career as Chief Chemist at Aerojet, Jonesborough.
During World War II, he taught physics and other science courses at Elizabethton High School and also worked the 3-11 p.m. shift at Bemberg. He took great pride in the fine young men who went into special branches of service in the war, using their background in science. Many of these young men later became lifelong friends.
He was a long-time member of Southwestern Baptist Church, serving in many capacities. His passion was church music. He is remembered for his deep bass voice as he sang in the choir for many years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Lacey Maugans.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Anna E. Lacey; daughter, Dr. Barbara L. McManus and her husband, Dr. Phillip E. McManus, Kingsport; granddaughter, Jeannie Pelosi and her husband, Anthony, Atlanta, Ga.; grandson, Rob McManus, Johnson City; sister, Gladys L. Jones, Miami, Fla.
There will be a private entombment at Roselawn Memory Gardens.
Appalachian Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 800 E. Watauga Ave., is serving the Lacey family.
