Daughter of Charles Thomas Lilly & Amy Winifred Parsons
1975-Craig, Moffat, Colorado
Lula Marie LILLY was born April 29, 1894 in Bentonville. Arkansas. Her parents moved to Sparks, Oklahoma when Lula was but two years old. She grew up six miles south of Choctaw City, Oklahoma, and went to Valley School there and graduated from grade school on June 14, 1909, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
When Lula was sixteen years old, she entered HILL's Business College, taking a Commercial Course---Bookkeeping, shorthand & typing. Before finishing the shorthand and typing courses, she took a job with the Kansas City Life Insurance Company, holding that position for six years.
Lula married Robert Taylor COUNTS on March 3, 1917 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Their first child was born on January 27, 1918 in Oklahoma City.
Her husband, Robert COUNTS, found a job on the Denver & Salt Lake Railroad on March 15, 1918 and homesteaded 10 miles northwest of Great Divide, CO.
They lived in Tabernash, the winter of 1918 and Robert fired an engine that pulled the snowplows up the hill of Corona. Sometimes it took three engines to get to the top, as they had to go 9 miles around the hill to get to the top.
The family started to move from Tabernash to their homestead in Moffatt County in a covered wagon with just one team of horses on April 7. When they had gone five miles this side of Sulpher Springs, they found the snow so deep that they couldn't go any further. They had to return to Sulpher Springs and get everything ready to ship on the train. Robert bought a saddle in Sulpher Springs and rode one horse, leading the others all the way to Craig. He traveled over what was called "The Trough Road" finally making it to their homestead.
With not too many mishaps, they arrived at their homestead and began "Homesteaad Life" in traditional style which as everyone knows, was not easy.
They built their new frame home as soon as possible, also raising huge gardens, with the children hoeing in the garden to keep the ever mounting weeds down.
Lula made her own bread, butter, etc., and canned bushels of vegetables, and what fruit they were able to find. She kept a lovely home for her family in spite of all the outside work. The children went to summer school on the Divide.
in 1936 or 37 the family moved to Cedar Mountain where Lula still lives. After moving to Cedar Mountain Robert again worked for the railroad at Craig. As the children grew older and ready for high school they were sent into Craig to school.
As in most families, life couldn't go serenely on for all of them. She lost her husband in 1955. She didn't falter but faced life without her loyal husband. She now lives with her daughter in Pueblo, CO in the winter time, but she is home in Craig for the summer. She does all of her own work and cooking for herself and some of her family and friends when they visit her. She goes regularly to church and to
"Senior Citizens" dinners and meetings.
Robert & Lula COUNTS became the parents of ten children; Mary COUNTS WAGNER, Robert COUNTS, Charlie COUNTS, Evelyn Shinn, James G. COUNTS, Juanita UPDIKE, Eugene COUNTS, Charlotte COUNTS Douglas White, Fern PIERCE and Wesley COUNTS.
