Dr. Carol Henry Bates, 65, passed from this life to life eternal on August 3, 2010.

She was born on August 31, 1944, in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Dr. Carl F. H. Henry and Mrs. Helga Bender Henry.

Dr. Bates earned the bachelor of music degree in piano performance at Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL; and the M. M. and Ph.D. in musicology at Indiana University. During her graduate studies she met and four years later married William H. Bates. She held several teaching positions across the years—at Houghton College, NY; The University of West Florida; and the University of South Carolina, Columbia. As a scholar Dr. Bates was best known for her discovery of the long-lost book of harpsichord pieces by the seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century French composer Elisabeth-Jacquet de la Guerre, and for her research on seventeenth-century French harpsichord and sonata music in general. For five years she was editor of Early Keyboard Journal. At the time of her death, Dr. Bates was listed in Who'sWho of American Women, Who'sWho in America, and Who'sWho in the World.

Dr. Bates was preceded in death by her parents and by her brother, Congressman Paul B. Henry (MI).

Surviving are her husband of almost 39 years, Dr. William H. Bates of Columbia; son, Stephen Henry Bates and his wife, Amy, of Oakbrook Terrace, IL; one nephew, Jordan Henry and his wife, Lara, of Los Angeles; and two nieces, Kara Beth Henry of Chicago and Megan Henry Shugarman and her husband, Keith, of Annapolis, MD.

Dr. Bates was a member of Columbia's First Presbyterian Church, where a memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. August 5. Dr. Mark E. Ross, The Rev. Neal R. Mathias and The Rev. David H. Lauten will officiate. Following the service, friends may greet the family in Jackson Hall.

Interment will take place alongside her parents in Watertown, WI.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Carol Henry Bates Scholarship in Piano Performance at Wheaton College, 501 College Avenue, Wheaton, IL 60187-5593.

Shives Funeral Home is assisting the family.

The family wishes to thank the staff of South Carolina Oncology Associates—especially Dr. Robert Smith, Nichole Hendry, Pam Posey, and Gwen Shannon-Grant—for their professional yet loving care through the years.

Through out her life and in many different circumstances Dr. Bates served her risen Savior, Jesus Christ. She was especially a strong witness to her family, to her students, and to her colleagues. Even as her cancer began to take its toll, she continued this witness by sending countless notes of spiritual encouragement to other women who were suffering from the disease.
