Son of Mary Frances Izlar and George Swinton Legare.

He married in Charleston, SC, June 26, 1924, Lila Ewart Rhett, daughter of Mary Ripley Ewart and William Aiken Rhett. Lila was born in 1903, died in 1996. After William's death she married second Frank Burroughs Birthright, #35381837, born 1900, died 1983.

William registered for the World War I Draft in Charleston, SC, September 6, 1918, at age 18, Student at Bailey Military Institute; nearest relative Mrs. George S. Legare; address of both 12 Bee St., Charleston, Charleston Co., SC.

William graduated from Baily Military Institute; attended Porter Military Academy and Davidson College. He graduated from USC in 1924 with LL. B.

He served in the Infantry, US Army, in 1918, and attained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.

William was an attorney. He was a member of the SC House, 1925-1926, and represented Charleston Co. in the SC Senate, 77th and 78th General Assembly, 1927-1930.

He died from injuries in an automobile accident in Orangeburg Co., SC, along with Senator Martin.

Death Certificate states he was buried in Charleston, SC, February 9, 1930, but did not list the cemetery. Placed in Magnolia Cemetery because his parents and several family members were buried in Magnolia Cemetery.
