Death Date: 01/15/1982WWI Veteran, USNRF - Charles M. VanWoert had been the son of Grant Ulysses VanWoert (1866-1952), and Elizabeth H. (Butcher) VanWoert (1870-1951). They had lived at 1019 Washington St. in Kalamazoo, MI, where he had registered for the Draft Board at the No. 1 station. He entered the camp in Great Lakes, IL on July 29th., 1918. He was released for active duty and transfered to inactive status in the USNRF. He was discharged from service on Dec. 24th. 1918. Charles worked for the Michigan Light Company both before and after WWI. On Sept. 8th. 1917, he married Eva Melvina (Smith) VanWoert (b. 1/18/1892, Lawrence, MI) in St. Joseph, MI. The courthouse was known locally as Cupid's Haven or the "Gretna Green."
