Civil War Union Army Officer. The brother of Major Nathan B. Rossell, 3rd United States Infantry, he was appointed as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 10th United States Regular Infantry. After the Civil War broke out he was promoted to Captain, and led a battalion at the February 1862 Battle of Valverde, New Mexico, where he was captured by Confederate forces. Eventually exchanged, he retired from active service on November 28, 1863. He was brevetted Major, U.S. Regular army for "gallant and meritorious services at the battle of Valverde, N. M., to date from Feb. 21, '62."
