John W. Cornell was the first child of Nathan Cornell and his first wife, Clarinda Orr. Nathan and Clarinda were married in Pontotoc MS in 1851 and John was born in MS shortly after in 1852, most likely in Pontotoc.

His parents moved the family to Texas during the 1850s to the area of Donelton Township, which straddles the border between Hunt and Hopkins County, Texas. This is the area between Lone Oak and Miller's Grove. His mother's parents (Orr family) moved to the same area, probably in or near Lone Oak.

He later married Ellen Graves in Hunt County, TX on New Year's Day, 1874. Her parents, Jefferson A. Graves (1836- ) and Sarah Nabors (1835- ) of Alabama, were from nearby Upshur County.

They moved to Grayson County in the 1880s and lived in or near Denison.

John and Ellen moved their family to Oklahoma Indian Territory, near Mannsville, in the late 1890s.

John died in El Paso, TX on 13 Aug 1926. The death certificate listed his residence at the time as Ardmore, OK, but he was a grocer living in Dallas with a second wife, Fannie, at the time. He was buried in Ardmore, OK. A burial record from Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home of Ardmore lists "James W. Cornell" with a matching date of death, and with the reference of "B9" in Rose Hill Cemetery.

A burial record has not been found for Ellen, but she died in Durwood OK in 1914.
