William Baxter Morrison died peacefully on December 2, 2015 in Roanoke, Virginia. Baxter, as he was known by his friends, was born on May 18th, 1928 in Rockbridge County, Virginia. He was the child of Kenneth Lamar Morrison and Bessie Anna Lam Morrison, both born in Rockbridge County, Virginia.

Baxter spent most of his life in Virginia, living in the Crystal Springs section of Roanoke and was employed by Bank of America, Tanglewood Branch, before his retirement. Growing up outside of Lexington on a farm settled by the Morrison family in the 1780s on Kerrs Creek, he moved into Lexington as a youth and graduated from Lexington High School. He attended classes at Washington and Lee and also served in the US Navy. A builder and restorer of pipe and pump organs, and an avid antique collector, he also enjoyed helping with antique auctions. He located the original lamps that had been in the family church, New Monmouth Presbyterian, had them electrified and restored and presented them as well as a pump organ he had restored as a gift to the church. He currently was an active member of the Metropolitan Community Church of the Blue Ridge and served as a church organist for many years at various churches across the Roanoke Valley. Baxter was a lifelong member of the Masons.

Baxter has spent his last several years as a resident of Friendship Retirement Community in Roanoke. The family wishes to convey their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Friendship and as well as to Our Lady of the Valley, where Baxter resided previously, for the care and compassion that was shown him. It was greatly appreciated.

Baxter was predeceased by his parents and his brothers Kenneth Lamar Morrison of Lexington, Alfred Milton Morrison of Houston, Texas, and sister, Mary Morrison Shields Livesay of Lexington. Baxter is survived by his niece, Mary Caroline Mitchell, husband David, of Springfield, Illinois, nephews, Eddie Shields, wife Donna, and Bobby Shields, wife Carol, both of Lexington, and numerous grand and great grand nieces and nephews. In addition he is survived by Justin, his guardian angel, and by many friends, all who loved him dearly.

Funeral Services were held at the Metropolitan Community Church of the Blue Ridge, 806 Jamison Avenue SE, Roanoke, Virginia 24013 on Monday, December 7, 2015 at 2:00 pm. A viewing was held from 1 to 2 pm before the service. Burial was in the New Monmouth Presbyterian Church Cemetery at the family’s convenience.
