U.S. Consul to Amsterdam. He was born in Charlottenburg, Prussia. He belonged to a secret society, which advocated a constitutional government for the German Empire. In 1824, the conspiracy was uncovered and he was convicted of treason and sentenced to fifteen years in prison. After he was pardoned in 1829, he left Germany for the United States. He was the U.S. Consul for the Port of Amsterdam from 1849 to 1850, Indiana State Auditor from 1861 to 1863. He was a Republican mayor of Terre Haute, Indiana from 1863 to 1867.
