Emma Brown Hubbard, 87, of Winston-Salem, passed from this life Thursday evening, December 3, 2015 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Emma was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Lewis Edwin Hubbard, in 2008, and by four of her seven siblings. She is survived by her three children, Lewis E. Hubbard, Jr. (Eddie, and wife Diane) of Advance, Bruce R. Hubbard (and wife Marsie) of Winston-Salem, and Beverly H. Godfrey (and husband Brant) of Winston-Salem, six grandchildren, William A. Hubbard (and wife Katie) of Winston-Salem, Matthew J. Hubbard of Clemmons, Mary H. Lischke (and husband Jonathan) of Pacific Palisades, California, Elizabeth H. Kleiner (and husband Chad) of Boca Raton, Florida, Jay Godfrey of Los Angeles, California, and John-Lewis H. Godfrey of Winston-Salem, five great-grandchildren, Haley M. Hubbard of Winston-Salem, Joshua C. Hubbard, Sydney M. Hubbard and Colton L. Hubbard of Clemmons, and Anna-Blakely Lischke of Pacific Palisades, as well as Emma’s brothers Carl Brown and Rex Brown, and sister Vicki Brown Williams.

Emma was born on the Fourth of July, 1928 in Cynthiana, Kentucky, the first of eight children. Her considerable parenting and organizational skills were put to use early on as the eldest of six boys and a baby sister, and served Emma well throughout her life in her many roles as big sister, homemaker and businesswoman, devoted mother and grandmother. After marrying in 1944, Emma moved to Winston-Salem with Lewis from Fayetteville in 1946, founding Hubbard Real Estate Company. As true partners in marriage, entrepreneurship and service, Lewis and Emma dedicated themselves to “doing the job, and doing it right”. Emma’s attention to detail and insistence on doing all things well served as a standard for both her business associates and her children; love was a given, respect was earned. Emma was a constant in her children’s lives, always in attendance at Tiny Demon football games, Dorminy dance recitals, and Whitaker, Wiley and Reynolds events. A lifelong member of Fairview Moravian Church, Emma also served as the Registrar for the Whitaker precinct for many years, was a member of the Buena Vista Garden Club, the Winston-Salem Child Study Club, and was an avid and accomplished Master bridge player, winning the Duplicate Bridge Tournament championship at Pinehurst. In later years, she chose to be called “Nanny”, as Lewis’ teasing about “Granny” on the Beverly Hillbillies was unrelenting. As Nanny, she will always be remembered as the dear heart, the caring and kind provider, the lover of laughter, and an inseparable half of the duo of (now reunited) Nanny and Papa.

The family expresses its sincere appreciation to the staff at the Gerontology and Geriatric Service at Wake Forest Baptist Health, and in particular Dr. Franklin S. Watkins, for their compassion and care, and to all the staff of the Memory Care Center at Trinity Elms, especially Suzanne, Nita, “Chelsea 1” and “Chelsea 2”, Norma, Helen, Harmony and Margo.

The family will receive friends on Monday evening at Salem Funeral Home, 120 South Main Street in Winston-Salem from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 1:00 P.M. at Fairview Moravian Church, 6550 Silas Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem, followed by a graveside service in the Salem Moravian Graveyard.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in Emma’s memory to Fairview Moravian Church, 6550 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.
