He married Margaret Jane McNabb on May 8, 1851. They had four children -- Sarah, Walter, Thomas, and Ivy. He was enlisted on February 10, 1861. He was commissioned an officer in Company S, Ohio 71st Infantry Regiment, on October 2, 1861. He was killed during the Battle of Shiloh in Tennessee, on April 6, 1862.
