John E. "Jack" Dennis, 85, of Bloomington, died at 4:50 p.m. Friday (Aug. 11, 2006) at his home in Bloomington.

Jack was born Dec. 17, 1920, in Peoria, a son of Harry Dennis and Catherine Carbery Dennis.

He married Florence Belz on March 6, 1943, at St. Patrick's Church in Bloomington. She survives.

Other survivors include a daughter, Kate (Larry) Rousey of Bloomington, who was a devoted caregiver throughout his illness; two sons, Thomas F. Dennis of Ogden and Patrick Dennis of Bloomington; a sister, Mary Sue (Robert) Kerr of Bal-win, Mo.; grandchildren, John R (Tania) Dennis of Fredricks-burg, Va.; Michael (Marie) Dennis, currently serving in Iraq; Mary Kate Dennis of Ann Arbor, Mich.; Sarah and Kaeleigh Rousey of Bloomington; and Shannon Dennis of Bloomington; and great-grandchildren, Ethan and Sean Dennis of Fredricksburg, Va. Jack is further survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; and three brothers, Joseph, William and Gene Dennis.

Jack was a member of St. Patrick's Church in Bloomington and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society of the church, a member of the Father John D. Ring Council 574 of the Knights of Columbus, Bloomington, and was a Fourth Degree Knight, and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

After graduating from Trinity High School in Bloomington in 1938, Jack served a four-year electrician apprenticeship at the C&A Railroad in Bloomington and he later retired from the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad in 1983 as division electrical supervisor after 45 years of service.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving from 1944 to 1946 in the Philippine Islands.

Jack enjoyed refinishing and upholstering furniture, reading about historical and current events, and traveling to Ireland and parts of Europe, a trip he made three times.
