REV. RAYMOND E. ACKLEY, 58, WELL KNOWN AREA RESIDENT OF Canton, went home to be with the Lord late Saturday morning, Dec. 6, 1997, at the Robert Packer Hospital, following an extended illness. Rev. Ackley was born July 18, 1939 in Endicott, N.Y. He was a son of the late Leonard and Lena Babcock Ackley. Ray was a graduate of Vestal High School, class of 1958. He continued his education at the Buffalo Bible Institute, graduating in 1962. Following graduation, Rev. Ackley served as pastor for various churches throughout Pa., and N.Y. In 1978, the Ackleys moved to Leroy, where Ray became pastor of the Leroy Baptist Church. He served as pastor for 13 years until his retirement in 1990. In earlier years Ray enjoyed hunting. He was also a CB radio enthusiast. Rev. Ackley will be best remembered as a very giving person. He loved people and possessed many dear friends. His main interest throughout life was family and faith in God. He was former pastor and member of the Leroy Independent Baptist Church. Survivors are his wife, Esther M. Ackley of Williamsport, Pa.; a daughter, Rachel Bunch of Lynchburg, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Nicole Ackley of Canton RR 1; four grandchildren; a brother, Frank Ackley of Newark Valley, N.Y.; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Ray was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Tartanian and Elsie Crandall. The funeral and committal service will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 10 at the Pepper Funeral Home, Springbrook Drive, Canton, with his pastor, Rev. Thomas Henderson and Rev. William Pepper, officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997, and Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m., one hour prior to the funeral service, at the funeral home. Private interment will be held in the Windfall Cemetery.
