Peter Hitt was born about 1726 at the Germantown settlement in what was then Stafford County, Virginia (the area became Prince William County in 1731 and then Fauquier County in 1759). His father was the elder Peter Hitt, who had immigrated to Virginia in 1714 as part of the Germanna Colony and had moved with other original Germanna settlers to their new home at Germantown about 1720. The mother of the younger Peter, wife of the immigrant, was Elizabeth Utterback.

Peter Hitt, the subject of this memorial, married Sarah James in Germantown, Virginia on April 27, 1759. Sarah was born about 1738, probably in Stafford County, and was apparently the daughter of Captain John James and Dinah (Allen) James.

Peter operated a general store in Fauquier County. His account book is believed to have survived at the Warrenton Library with a copy of it housed in the collection of the Baptist Historical Society at the University of Richmond. Peter was apparently an active member of the Carter’s Run Baptist Church in Fauquier County. Peter Hitt provided beef to the Fauquier County militia during the American Revolution, for which he was recognized by the county in 1782. He is recognized by the Daughters of the American Revolution as a supporter of the Patriot cause.

Peter Hitt died in Fauquier County in late 1809, leaving a will. The earliest date in the estate papers of “Peter Hitt, Sen.”, filed in Fauquier County, is January 29, 1810 on a “division of lands”, so Peter likely died a month or more earlier. Sarah (James) Hitt died in Fauquier County shortly BEFORE March 27, 1822, when the inventory of her estate was filed with the County Court.
